Chesterson on illegible text
Near the beginning of his Typography, Emil Ruder makes the point that foreign text (for instance, Latin) forces the reader to focus on the structure, rather than the meaning, of the printed word. He quotes an interesting observation by G.K. Chesterton, about the lights of Manhattan:
“What an enchanted garden that would be for anybody lucky enough not to be able to read it!”
